DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks NIOs began work on producing materials for the DCI's Worldwide Congressional Briefing package for January and February 1983. Chairman, NIC testified on the Hill before the Joint Economic Committee on prospects for the Soviet economy. NIO/NESA accompanied the DDCI to a 29 November SIG meeting on Libya at which the "Stair Step" plan was approved. II. Interagency Papers The draft Memo to Holders of the 1981 NIE on Greece and the draft NIE on political instability are ready for discussion at the NFIB meeting scheduled for 8 December. Drafts of the revised US-Japan economic relations NIE and the SNIE on high-technology arms markets are nearing the final stages of preparation and should be ready for an NFIB meeting in the week preceding Christmas. Work began today to produce a brief, fast-track SNIE on the possibility of hostilities on the Nicaraguan-Honduran border. III. Of Special Interest This Week Chairman, NIC interviewed two candidates for the polul~ &T job: Approved For Release 2007/03/03: CIA-RDP83M00914R002900050025-3 SECRET C/NIC along with NI0/Economics and f DI/OGI attended a SIG-IEP meeting on 29 November on East European debt (Yugoslavia and Poland), and alternative energy prospects. Ibriefed the meeting on the latter.) On 30 November, C/NIC and NIO/E attended a meeting with UnderSecretary of State for Economic Affairs Allen Wallis to discu followup actions on the Shultz "non-paper." (NIO/E and TTAC/OSWR, participated in a Working Group meeting on 1 December on East-West technology transfer as one specific followup.) C/NIC, NI0/E, and other Agency officers met on 2 December with Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs Richard McCormack to discuss how best to provide him with the intelligence support he needs. NIOs, Assistant NIOs, and AG members were briefed on NSA's organization, functions, and capabilities per. arrangements made through the Deputy Director, NSA. We will accept NSA's invitation for detailed followup briefings at Fort Meade for each NIO on his area. NIO at Large I I was interviewed on 30 November on the subject of Brazil in the 1960s for a public television program to be shown on 28 December. NIO at Largel I arranged a session for the DCI with US Ambassador to Pakistan Ronald Spiers on nuclear and other issues in US- Pakistan relations. C/NIC and NI0/NESA also participated. A/NIO/AL participated in the final session of the small nuclear forces project at Georgetown's CSIS. The project director (R. Jones) will present results of the project at a briefing in the DCI Conference Room next week. NIO/Near East-South Asia and his assistants attended a State- sponsored seminar on Iran on 29 November. He also prepared a memo for the DCI in conjunction with the DI and DO, on the Pakistan-US nuclear weapons issue; participated on 30 November in an interagency meeting chaired by Assistant Secretary of Defense West to review the status of US military support for Lebanon; and sent to selected policymakers a contingency analysis of the implications of Jordan acting alone in advancing the US peace initiative in the Middle East. NIO/Strategic Programs met with CIA, Air Force Intelligence, OSD, and NSC staff personnel to go over his testimony on MX for the SSCI on Approved For Release 2007/03/03: CIA-RDP83M00914R002900050025-3 SECRET 8 December. He will also be invited to testify to the Senate Armed Services Committee next week. NI0/USSR-East Europe attended a meeting of the Poland Working Group to devise a policy on the lifting of martial law. _ 29 J 4aveinuer NI0/Western Europe participated in a meeting at State on 29 November on the US-Greece base negotiations. He also briefed the West European COS conference on 2 December on developments in the area and intelligence requirements. IV.
