Gates Deputy Director for Intelligence SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report, 6 - 10 December 1982 DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks OGI published a typescript, requested by the DCI, on the health of Andropov. OEA and SOVA prepared memoranda for the DCI to send to Secretary Shultz on Sino-Soviet relations. SOVA prepared memoranda for the DCI on Soviet motivations for the use of chemical weapons, possible Soviet initiatives at the INF talks, and the state of the Soviet economy and opportunities for closer US-USSR ties. SOVA is preparing a paper for the President on Andropov's power and the opportunities for the US to influence Soviet policy. ALA briefed Phillip Hughes, Assistant to the Vice President, on internal politics in Dominica. EURA and OGI met with Roger Robinson of the NSC Staff to discuss international financial issues. EURA provided unclassified material on the peace movement to Bob Simms, the Special Assistant and Press Secretary to Judge Clark, through the Office of External Affairs. NESA briefed HPSCI staffers on intelligence on Lebanon. NESA sponsored a one-day seminar on Algeria at the Key Bridge Marriott. Approved For Release 2007/03/03: CIA-RDP83M00914R002900050016-3 OEA met with State Department officers to discuss Agency support for Secretary Shultz' trip to the Far East early next year. OGI met with Michael Driggs, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Automotive Industry Affairs to discuss the impact of market access restrictions on direct forei n investment 25X1 OSWR and OGI met with Ron Frankum, Deputy Director of OSTP, to discuss the proposed sale by Belgium of ITT advanced telephone switching systems to China. OSWR participated in an interagency briefing of the UN-CW experts group two weeks ago. It appears to have helped. The UN group concluded that "circumstantial" evidence supports US charges of lethal chemical use by Soviets and their surrogates in Afghanistan and Southeast Asia. Looking Ahead EURA will debrief Bradley Graham of the Washington Post on his experiences in West Germany and will brief him on the situation in Poland in preparation for his assignment there.
