DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks
OGI prepared a sanitized version of its analysis of European gas demand and
alternatives to the Soviet pipeline for the DCI.
OSWR and SOVA responded to a DCI request for the status of work on ovie
Design Bureaus and for background information on Soviet petitions at the UN for
positioning satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
SOVA revised the memorandum for the DCI on the state of the Soviet economy in
the 1980s.
Of Special Interest This Week
ALA completed a typescript on Soviet military shipments to Cuba for Congress.
ALA briefed Ambassador Kirkpatrick on the current situation in Central America.
EURA hosted a session for Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Lasater
to discuss the peace movement in Western Europe.
At the request of the NSC, NESA prepared a typescript, Jordan: A Role in the
Peace Process. It was also forwarded to Vice President Bush, Judge Clark, Secretary
Shultz, and Secretary Weinberger.

OGI hosted a seminar on "Urbanization and Political Stability in the Third World."
It was attended by Agency personnel and academic specialists.
OGI attended a meeting of the State Department working group on forced labor in
the USSR. The groups final report will be sent to Congress on 3 January 1983.
OSWR is responding to some additional questions posed by Assistant Secretary of
State McCormack on the Belgian request to export an advanced telephone switching
system to China.
Looking Ahead
OSWR is preparing an analysis of technology transfer by the Austrian firm Voest-
Alpine for Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce Denysyk and Assistant Secretary of
Defense Perle. It will be used in discussions with the Austrians.
OSWR will prepare a briefing memorandum for the President on Soviet acquisitions
of strategic technology from Japan for his upcoming meeting with Nakasone.
