SUBJECT: DDI Activity Report, 17 - 21 May 1982
DCI/DDCI-Assigned Tasks
ALA has prepared a paper on Mexico's financial problems for the DCI to forward to
Assistant Secretary of State Robert Hormats.
OGI wrote a brief on Latin American debt and borrowing conditions for the DCI to
use as background material for a meeting of the President's Economic Advisory Board.
OGI prepared a briefing paper for the Executive Director on Third World
instability. The paper was to be delivered at a Defense Intelligence Agency conference.
SOVA and OGI prepared a briefing paper and talking points on Western alternatives
to Soviet natural gas in support of a potential NSC meeting.
Of Special Interest This Week
ADDI, along with OSWR and SOYA, briefed the SSCI on Intelligence Community
capabilities to monitor Soviet strategic offensive weapons.
EURA briefed HPSCI staffers on developments in Poland and Senate Armed
Services staffers on West European attitudes toward SALT 11

OEAA had an external consultant n to review the draft of a
paper on reducing and streamlining the Chinese Army.
NESA prepared a memorandum that was requested by Judge Clark on the Israeli-
Iranian arms relationship.
I I of MIT led an OGI sponsored seminar on Tribalism in World Affairs. 25X1
Over 40 Agency personnel attended.
OGI briefed Under Secretary Seely Lodwick, USDA, and members of the US Special
Trade Representative Staff on current grain developments.
OSWR briefed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Bryen on diversion of
Western technology from India to the USSR.
SOVA hosted the DCI's Military-Economic Advisory Panel.
Looking Ahead
OSWR met with the Under Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and
Acquisition and members of the Army Science Board to plan the summer conference on
CW.
Briefings
The Directorate was involved in 14 briefings at all levels on the Hill this week.
