NOTE FOR: Director of Central Intelligence
Deputy Director of Central Intelligence
Executive Director
FROP1: Acting Director, Office of External Affairs
SUBJECT: Phil Taubman, New York Times, Query
1. Phil Taubman, NYT, has asked fora DCI comment on remarks
Taubman claims Senator Lugar made in a press conference this
afternoon. According to Taubman, Lugar said:
--The SSCI has good relations with the DDCI. Congress'
ability to serve as a check and balance on
intelligence activities depends on the information
it is provided.
--He does not believe the DCI will have the trust the
DDCI enjoys because the DCI does not "know enough
about intelligence." The DCI lacks the DDCI's
years of experience in the field that have enabled
him to gain the confidence of the Committee.
--The Committee is still unhappy about its access to
the DCI and is displeased it was not informed of the
DDCI's resignation until the last moment.
2. This is for your information. It does not deserve a response
and Public Affairs will tell Taubman that the DCI has no comment on
the alleged remarks.
