Approved For Release 2006/05/24: CIA-RDP83M00914R002100170021-2 SECRET DCI WORLDWIDE BRIEFING - EL SALVADOR Country Trends Government Forces: 21,000 armed forces 9,000 security forces 30,000 total Armed Guerrillas: Estimate 5,000 fulltime, similar number militia Government: -- 80-85 percent turnout in March 1982 constituent assembly elections. -- Confiscated large estates under Phase I currently benefit some 30,000 peasant families. -- Distributed private plots under Phase III currently benefit 32,000 peasant familites; some 35,000 land titles have been awarded since March 1980. -- Far right opposition to the reforms in May/June was successfully countered by President Magana and the military in conjunction with protests from the labor sector and the Christian Democratic Party. -- Armed Forces are improving their combat performance against the guerrillas as seen by the taking of prisoners, increased small patrol operations, better coordination and planning of major sweeps, and better use of air and naval support.
