NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
2101 CONSTITUTION AVENUE
WASHINGTON, D. C. 20419
January 4, 1982
Admiral Bobby R. Inman
Deputy Director
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C. 20505
Recently, the NAS received a copy of a working paper on the
International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)
prepared by staff of the Central Intelligence Agency. After
carefully reviewing its contents, we believe that the working
paper
does not accurately reflect the current activities
and
staff
of the Institute. Moreover, we believe that there
have
been
important developments bearing on the Institute and
its
work
that would be germane to the assessment of its value
to
the United States.
As the U.S. National Member Organization in IIASA, we are
seriously concerned that the Agency's report on the Institute
should be as accurate and current as possible. In order to
best serve the national interest we believe the working paper
should be updated to include all relevant information on the
present situation at the Institute. We would hope that this
review would include contributions from individuals who are
familiar with the current staff, work, and facilities of,
as well as with the views of our Western partners in IIASA.
Since the governing Council of the Academy and its Commis-
sion on International Relations will be considering the future
relationship of the Academy to IIASA during their forthcoming
meetings in February, we are anxious that an updated report
be prepared by early February, if at all possible. To this end,
the Academy is prepared to assist the Agency in any way you may
deem appropriate and useful.
