Approved For Release 2007/03/02 : CIA-RDP B3'M0 FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION May 7, 1982 Honorable William J. Casey Director 'J Central Intelligence Agency Washington, DC 20505 Thanks so much for your willingness to include, in your Homestead speech, mention of the project for a U.S. National Exhibition in Beijing in 1984. Upon reflection, it appeared better to arrange a full-dress presentation. of the project at the October meeting of the Business Council. Jack Burke offered to set this up. Charlie Wick and I.M. Pei could then unveil graphics and scale models. Joe Charyk of Comsat has taken on the leadership of this project. It is now in Phase II: solicitation of contributions from the private sector to underwrite the design and layout by I.M. Pei and his creative group. The following firms are sponsors thus far: AT&T, Sun Oil, ITT, Hughes Communications, Coca Cola, Comsat, Metromedia and Xerox. The Exhibition, if realized, will run for 3 1/2 months beginning in June of 1984. It will be viewed by some 10 million Chinese attendees. Like our American Exposition in Moscow in 1959, where Nixon and Khrushchev debated, it is not a trade fair but a presentation of America's progress, character, ideals. The 9-acre site designated by the Chinese is 20 minutes by bicycle from Tiananmen Square. I.M. Pei calls it "an ideal location". Approved For Release 2007/03/02 : CIA-RDP83MOO914R002100110053-3 In the election year of 1984, the President would have the option of going to Beijing to open the Exhibition. With the eyes of the world focused on it, it would give the Soviets fits. was very considerate and helpful. In our conversation I mentioned that, if Your schedule permits, we would like to find a mutually convenient time for oe our DC office and give you an update. O-We would all be grateful for any suggestions you may ave ..Q, thl s und__- Berta All best regards.
