SUBCOMMITTEE ON OVERSIGHT SELECT COMMITTEE ON NARCOTICS ABUSE AND CONTROL August 11, 1982 Mr. William J.. Casey Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Mr. Casey: Fsecu:i~e kI( ir} I have recently received several letters from the family members of the late Ida Ford, one of the four churchwomen slain in El Salvador on December 2, 1980. They have each asked me to help them gain information concerning Ms. Ford's untimely death and the subse- quent investigation of the Salvadorian murders. I am sure that you are quite familiar with this par- ticular case. Mr. William Ford, attorney and brother of the late Ms. Ford, has indicated that his family and the families of the other three slain churchwomen have had frequent correspondence with the F.B.I., C.I.A., State Department and Defense Intelligence Agency. Mr. Ford and the. members of.the other fami- lies feel that in each case the C.I.A. and the other agencies have delayed them and have evaded their request for information about the murders. Because I have not been sufficiently oriented with the exact nature of the allegations made against the C.I.A. or with the C.I.A.'s own defense against these charges, I am not at liberty nor adequately qualified to comment on the validity of either. Regardless of this fact, the blatant failure of the nation's intelligence agencies to arrive at sound and concurring investigative Approved For Release 2007/05/10: CIA-RDP83M00914R001800010012-3 Mr. William J. The further failure of the C.I.A. and other related agencies to communicate acceptable results to the families of the churchwomen implies a certain degree of disservice and insensitivity towards the public. These facts, unfortunately, speak for themselves. It is not my intention to randomly accuse the C.I.A. of improprieties. Instead, I am urging your deter- mined efforts in making the facts behind the El. Salvador killings and investigations which followed properly known to the concerned families by patiently and carefully cooperating with the families' request for documents relating to the death and investigation. It is most imperative that this working cooperation with the families is achieved so that the cause and motive behind the Salvadorian murders may be brought to light and so that justice may ultimately. prevail. I would greatly appreciate. your immediate response to my comments and requests. Thank you very m for your time and efforts. CBR:mgp cc: William P.
