DeLauer Under Secretary of Defense Research and Engineering SUBJECT: Your Request for LASINT Briefings REFERENCE: USDRE: 82 0154, dated 16 February 1982 1. In response to your request in reference letter, I have asked Wayne Boring, Director of OSWR, to give you and Mr. Airey a briefing on Soviet high energy laser activities. I understand you did receive a briefing on this subject late last year, but as far as we know Mr. Airey has not yet received a formal briefing on Soviet activities in this area. 2. There are a number of intelligence reports which have been published over the last several years and I have also asked Mr. Boring to make those documents available to you, Mr. Airey and any other appropriately cleared members of your staff. Approved For Release 2007i021~. ~: C.lA~83M00914R001000060058-6 5. We recognize the strong interest of the DoD in the Soviet laser program and have taken a number of steps to further enhance both information collection and analysis in this area. During the FY-84 program cycle I will be once again reviewing these activities and assessing the relative priority for funding of a new satellite-based collection system. 6. As always I would welcome your views on DoD needs and priorities. B. R.
