Y September 29, 1982 Dear Sir: In'January of this year the-National Maritime Union held a Symposium on the subject of Methacoal which, we believe, will be the ship fuel of the future. The interest in Methacoal as witnessed by the response to our meeting was such that we printed the verbatim transcript of that Symposium, which you will find enclosed. Since our January meeting a number of papers have been published on this subject -- one study by the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center, U.S. Department of Energy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and one by DM International a subsidiary of DAVY International London, worldwide designers and constructors of Methanol plants. Both studies are enclosed. Next month the Pittsburgh Technology Center will present their findings at the American Flame Research Committee's Inter- national Symposium on Conversion to Solid Fuels to be held in Newport Beach,California. Their findings show that Methacoal can be well used for other than ship fuel. At a time when alternate sources of energy are being sought, we believe that Methacoal should be given serious consideration. Methacoal could very well be the number one alternative. We trust that you will find this material as interesting SJW/jlk Enclosures National Maritime Union of America Approved For Release 2007/02/20: CIA-RDP83M00914R001000060024-3
