SUBJECT: Lionel Olmer's Comments on Intelligence Coverage
of US-Japanese Trade and Economic Relations
During a very cogent presentation to the IPS Conference on 21 October,
Lionel Olmer repeatedly praised CIA coverage of Japanese trade and commercial
issues. Some of our reporting was critical to US negotiating positions;
other material deepened US understanding of Japanese policy. Although I
sensed that Olmer was speaking primarily about DDO reporting, I thought you
might want to sign the attached note passing on his praise to those who
deserve it.
