Dear Mr. McClory:
Thank you for your letter of 17 March concerning declassification of
hearings on the National Security Act of 1947 conducted in Executive Session
by the House Committee on Expenditures in the Executive Departments on
27 June 1947. I fully agree that it is in the public interest to declassify
those materials which no longer need be withheld for national security
considerations. Accordingly, I have asked.my staff to review the hearings
under the terms of Executive Order 12065 to determine ,,:hat portions can he
declassified.
I am enclosing a copy of the 1947 House hearings as well as a copy
of the "Legislative History of the Central Intelligence Agency--relational
Security Act of 1947" as you requested. The latter document has been
declassified, and the declassified version is also enclosed.
I appreciate your interest in this matter. We will inform You of the
results of the declassification review as soon as they are available.
