During the last week Soviet press commented on the opposition to
the Marxist regime in Afghanistan and hinted at ';oscow's deepening
military commitment to Kabul. In Pravda on December 7, under the
rubric "Commentator's Colume: Guarding the Revolution," Leonid
Mironov reporr.~d the formation of the National Organization for the
Defense of the Revolution (N^DR`.?, wh:h he termed as an important
political event. Mironov admits'
dmits that the establishment of NODR was
arompted by the "furious resistance to the revolution" ! by the counter-
revolutionaries and foreign reaction, According to Nironov, NODR's
function is to vigilantly guard revolutionary gains and to combat
the insurgency. In a related TASS comentary on December 4,, marking
the anniversary of the Soviet-Afghan T=:at, of Friendship and
C':'perat:)n, Nikolay Novikov notes the military aspect of the agreement
ai: on "conducting joint measures to insure the security, independence
and territorial integrity of both countries."
