Total personnel on duty as of 30 April was _ 2. Arrangements have been made to move the files of the War Documents Project to the Division for permanent retention. V 3, Mrp to duty on 6 April 25X1 A after four months' temporary duty for DD/P/FE. v' L. Within the Division, intensive training courses are being conducted in Rumanian (6 hours per week), Burmese (10 hours per week), Turkish (5 hours per week), and Russian (6 hours per week). In addition, "backstopping= courses,to increase the Division's flexibility, (2 hours per week) are being given in Mongolian, Chinese, and Russian. An English Review course (2 hours per week) is also being given. 5. FDD, was the 00 representative for the first formal presentation of Career Staff Certificates at a ceremony in the Office of the DCI on 27 April. 25X1A 25X1A OPERATIONS / 1. The 47th and 48th meetings of the Subcommittee on Exploitation of Foreign-Language Publications were held 15 and 29 April, respectively. The review of Eastern Europe was completed with minor adjustments in coverage and presentation. The review of the Southeast Asia program was completed; the following changes were agreed upon: (1) to discontinue the "Burma Information Report" with the June issue; (2) to issue the Indonesia information in two separate reports, a "Monthly Information Report on Indonesia" (FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY), and a "Background Report on Indonesia" (CONFIDENTIAL, NORFORN); and (3) to combine the Thailand and Indochina reports into one "Monthly Information Report on Continental Southeast Asia." 2 On 1 Aril Chief, FDD, and represent- ing office, SA/PC DCI, discussed with members of the Office of the Chief, Psychological Warfare, Department of the Army, OC/PsyWar's needs for exploitation of information from German captured documents. The OC/PsyWar presented a statement of projects it proposed be undertaken to meet its needs. Chief, Survey Staff, Economic Research Area, ORR, repor e to Chief, FDD, that in a survey of sources utilized by QRR analysts, FDD ranks third among all facilities used by them. !t. Deputy Chief, FDD, spoke on FDD operations at the Clan- destine Services Review Course No. Li. on 19 April. On 20 April, members of the course visited FDD for further orientation. 5. Reference to the CTS index prevented 40 cases of duplica- tion totaling 1214 pages. 6. During the month personnel from the USSR, Eastern Europe, and Scientific and Technical branches were briefed on Industrial Register operations at IR. It was agreed that FDD would not regularly analyze provincial press treatment of leading Soviet personalities; special studies from the provincial press may be undertaken upon request. Department of the Arrrty With G-2 to review the monthly information reports o n India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan; on the Arab States and on the "Selected Briefs from the International Press" to Me clarify needs prior to a program review by the Exploitation Subcommittee. It was indicated that Army will request more specific military information ^ - for its NIS report. Department of the Navy With ONI, to discuss operational details of USSR military report. Arrangements were made for FDD to receive Sovetskiy Flot and Sovetskiy Mo ak through Navy channels. Also with ONI, to discuss the Arab States 25X6 ONI expressed satisfaction with the report but c e that because of the great need for naval information on the area it would submit additional requirements to FDD. Department of the Air Force With the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center to assist in reconciling discrepancies in distances as given in USSR timetables and as observed on kilometer posts along the railroad tracks. With Air Information Division, Library of Congress, to explore -means of eliminating duplication between AID and FDD. Arrangements were made for AID to inform FDD of AID projects-in-process; AID will seek to eliminate duplication of FDD coverage of USSR military per- sonalities and will consider discontinuing the exploitation of for- eign-language newspapers except as needed for specific Air Force projects.
