As of 30.November the total personnel on duty was 2. On 12 November, members of the Clark Committee, visited FDD. Following a briefing by Chief.. FDD, they were conducted through the division for additional briefing by each of the branch chiefs. 3. Deputy Chief, FDD, spoke on FDD operations at the Clandes- tine Services Review Course., No. 1, on 17 November. 4. Chief, FDD, attended three meet s during the month with several ency officials and o discuss proposal for linguistic research leading to the development of an electronic translation machine. 1. The 39th and 40th meetings of the Subcommittee on Exploi- tation of Foreign Language publications were held 12 and 2 November, respectively. Western Europe, Latin America, programs were developed providing for (1) a monthly military, political, and economic report on Western Europe; (2) a semimonthly information report on Latin America; and (3) a monthly report on With agreement on these programs the Subcommittee has .completed the initial examinations and review of established programs will begin in January, at which time the Selected Briefs from the International Press and the exploitation program for scientific and technical p b cations will be considered. 2. The Linguist Service received 403 visitors during the month and screened 1554 pages of foreign language material. Reference to the CTS Index prevented 31 cases of duplication totaling 1010 pages. FDD prepared a special report on Contact Division support which indicated that contributions through this source have increased almost threefold in the past year. 4. Work was started on Project for the DD/P Area. This involves the translation from German JaMnd some Russian) of approximately 80,000 pages. A special overtime program has been devised with financial support supplied by PI to handle this requirement. 5. During the month the first of seven new FDD Summary series of scheduled reports were issued; "Report on overseas Chinese Activities in Southeast Asia" (semiquarterly) "Monthly Information Report on and Iran" "Political, Economic, and Sociological Report on Thailand" (semiquarterly) "Semiannual Report on USSR Republic Plan Fulfillment" "Monthly Information Report on Arab States "Monthly Information Report on Africa" "Monthly Information Report on India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan" 6. Department of the Army With 0-2, at the request of OCI, to discuss core timer reaction to the Eastern Europe military report. The OCI renres details in the coverage by FDD were worked out to the mutual satis- faction of all parties.
