FDD Monthly Progress Report - December 1961

1. Reporting on international communism within two weeks after
receipt of source material was initiated this month following an
11 December meeting with the Department of State's special studies

Publications held on 8 December. The Chairman reported to the
Committee that he had met with the Coordination Staff regarding ways
to improve collection of scientific and technical information on
the Soviet Bloc. He proposed that the collection problem with respect
to exploitation and translation of foreign langua ;e publications
could be solved in large part by the application of additional funds.
The Staff, following presentation of figures supplied by FDD, plans
to recommend to USIB the supplementary funding of FDD operations to
the extent of For expansion of the scientific-technical
program.
3. On request of the DD/P Machine Methods staff we are conducting
a test to determine the feasibility of extracting data from foreign
language documents preliminary to indexing by automatic data processing.
