1. /On file in the CIA Library are the texts of unpublished copywrited
lectures prepared by Marshall H Stone, Andrew MacLeish Distinguished
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago and delivered
by him at the University in April 1955 under the auspices of the
Committee of the University on Social Thought.
2. The lectures carry the inclusive title: "A Scholar on Safari:
Four Lectures on French Public Education in Africa South of the
Sahara." The individual lectures are respectively entitled:
I. Education in an African Setting.
II. The French Educational System in Africa - Past,
Present and Future.
III. French Instruction for Africans - the Curriculum.
IV. Appraisals.
3. Professor Stone qualifies himself to observe the French African
educational scene as follows:
"While my special interest and competence is in higher
mathematics, I have spent some thirty years of my life
as a teacher and have carried a fair amount of administrative
responsibility as part of my professional obligation."
4. In the course of his "safari", which term Professor Stone explains
means any trip, not necessarily a hunting trip, in Africa, he covered
most of French Africa South of the Sahara. While his lectures are
concerned primarily with education, he does not neglect discussion of
geography, economics and related subjects. Professor Stone had not
previously traveled in Africa,--7 f -:
