1. The increased cotton cultivation throughout Greece and in particular
in the Macedonia area, which covers 50% of the entire cotton cultivation
of Greece, has encouraged many businessmen to try to go into the cotton
ginning field. The good prices paid for Greek cotton and its good
quality has drawn the particular attention of the Greek Government which
is planning to substitute cotton for crops such as tobacco which are
subject to many market fluctuations.
2. Increased government interest in cotton production is evidenced by official
announcements of Prime Minister Marshall Parma os and Cordinat on
Minister Mr aliMaras on 3 Feb 55 that special protective measures
and, support will be granted to all cotton cultivators and particularly
those new to the field. To this end the government has authorized the
Agricultural Bank of Greece to grant cultivation loans up to a sum of
The government hopes to increase cotton cultivation by some 75 thousand
acres in 1955 for a total output of some 150 thousand metric tons of
unginned cotton. In addition, the government has decided to allow
unlimited export of cotton to all countries. The following figures show
the rapid increase of cotton production for the last three years.
