Moscow: It's harvest time in the Ukraine and in Russia's Central
A
Black Earth belt andf4frich grain crop is being gathered in after
a cold, wet spring and a record-breaking hot June and July.
Wheat has, for the most part, been already combined in the central
and even the northern Ukraine. But the harvest is still in progress
in the Black .6arth belt and all through the region grain is being
trucked to elevators and the straw is being stacked in the fields.
In many towns and villages along the paved Mos,.ow-Kharkov
highway sections of Pavement have been roped off and the golden
grain has been dullpe- out to dry. lhommatPeas ants cart it in in
the morning, in great socks, let it dry all day, then sweep it up
at evening and bring it sack to the farm.
Almost all the harvest is gathered mechanically, mostly with
combines although reapers and binders are still be be seen as well
as stationary threshers. Peasant women flailing the grain with
wooden, leather-thronged flails can be seon in peasant courtyards.
