ere is a collection of pictures from two big South Russian
cities--Rostov, the capital of the Don country, and Kharkov,
one of the two great Ukrainian centers.
Both of these are big flourishing induatrial centers and,
as well, lie at the heart of rich agricultural regions. Both are
typical Russian blends of the old and the new.

1-- Very handsome Rostov theater, built before World War II,
in modern architectural style. Building was badly damaged, as may
been seen from'photo, in one of Rostov battles and has not yet
been fully repaired.
2--Mosque in Rostov. If you look closely you can see the crescent
insignia on the domes.
3--Armenian Orthodox church in Rostov. Women on the-1r way to early
morning prayers.
4--Rus5ian Orthodox Church in Rostov. As is so often the case in
old Russian towns this church which is still very active o couples
one of 'oat prokinent sites in city, right on central square. Round
device in center of photo is traffic sign.
5-Picturesque view in frontvof Rostov cathedral. It looks more
like an Italian scene than a Russian one.

the touch of Mediterranean atmosphere which has found its way

-One of the biggest, if not the biggest building in Khakkov. The
State Bank headquarters on Dierzhinsky Square. Its unusual modern
style construction with the flying ramps connecting sections o
building across streets is unique in Russia.
8-Another viewlof Dzerzhinsky Square. Kharkov boasts that this is
the birrgest square in Russia, even bigger than Red Square.
9--Dzerzhinsky Square, Kharkov. Huge state buildings have been
built or are being built on all sides of the Square.
