Visit by New State Of Of Monthly Newspaper 1952 1952 25X1X6 25X1A2g 25X1A2g portartt events in Ladaki life are few. This year we had the pleasure oa visits area the Commander in Chief of the Indian Army and from the young Maharaja of Kashmir. Both showed a very kind interest in and made generous gifte to our small community. General Cszimj even visited the Church building and had a chat with our school children. ln June (1952) a new Deputy Commisaioner was appointed for the whale of Iadak in the person of Mr Dechen, a meMber of a strong Christian family that lived in our old station of Kyclang before coming to Ladak. Mr. Dechen worked in Srinagar for years and his return was a joy for everyone. Mr Dechen is the first native to be appointed as chief magistrate of Ladak and his presence and support may prove s blessing. 2. In October the Kashmar Government opened a girls school in Leh and appointed as headmistress Miss Sarah ammo, daughter of the chairwan of our Elders. This much needed School, the first in the country, seems to have made a- deed start even if it doee take seae girls away from our mission primary sehool. 3. In order to better answer the particular' needs and questioas of Tibetane, a new series Of leaflets was printed this summer making use of Ladaki sayings or building parables on features of every. day Ladaki life. The experiment proved successful and in several cases Buddhists could easily be engaged in religious talks over the new tracts. TOgether with the printing of the leaflets we revived the se-called Ladaki Newspaper that was first printed by? A U Fr04010 as far back as 1904. It is a small monthly review noV containing parts of a Christian biography, a page of hygiene, and a sermon together with some Tibetan legend or chronicle and world news in brief. Through Brother Kliyah's deep kaowledge of the Tibetan language, this paper can be produced in the best conditions and satisfy educated laymen and lamas. Published sines the month of May, it soon met with a pleasant success and people buy It readily, even from distant places, and we are confident that the many hours spent in writing, copying and printing it on a hand duplicator are not wasted at it is carried 6 Qa Ns IVY 1 1182veviEd infoirg70-gp for OS Officio!: C2 ,V,IINfted for Ito ossitle interest 0 Alm Moil 41184V.S. it itoss not warrant dissenii- 4.41111 ?? ,,,,- ., ,? , , 25X1A2g, Approved For Release 1999/09/10 : CIA-RDP83-00423R00091100E21:1111 01 Clk ,` 10 Approved FoApiholiiiiagielQ9-114:glAMP,?3-00423R000900260001-3 71"'Ta ,to places and bows otherwise inaccessible, 4. 8.004 copies of communist propaganda reviews it Tibetan have recently co-_ through. the 'bamboo curtain and our paper looked shabby beside the- gorgeous color photo- .gx.aphs- diSpIsyed by the Chinese.
