TiLLQFAX,ll RANSWW"" '414illi COUNTRY: Spain _ SUBJECT: Production of Synthetic Gasoline Place Acquired: 25X1A6a Date Acquired: M Date of Info: Apr 53 SOURCE: 423R00070,1 220001-8 25X1A2g 25X1X6 "Translated from the Spanish Bulletin of Commercial Information, issued by the Ministry of Commerce - May 21, 1953 "THE PRODUCTION OF SYNTHETIC GASOLINE 1. "In recent talks with press reporters, by one of the technical men in the Research Center of the National Undertaking Calvo Sotelo, he pointed out that the problem of the production of synthetic gasoline at the Puertollano plant had been discussed, in relation to its economical aspect. From these statements it may be con- cluded that although up to the present time synthetic gasoline comes up to a higher price than petroleum gasoline, in the mentioned plant the gasoline is just one of the products that will be turned out there and not in a large percentage, so that the economical operation of the process is assured by the simultaneous production of other products, especially lubricating oils. 2. ,t Puertollano, 17,000 tons of gasoline a year will be produced against.x+5,000 tons of various lubricants. Production of gasoline means only about 5% of the national consumption, while lubricants will cover 75% of the spanish market, a significant figure for the industrialization of the country that is being brought about in the past few years. 3. "On the other hand, with the 200,000 tons of petroleum gasoline pro- duced in the Refinery of Escombreras and 80,000 tons in Tenerife, the Spanish market is only short of another 130,000 tons, while in respect of gas-oil and fuel-oil national production covers by far present demand, although the increasing future needs of the country may warrant the establishment of new refineries, either in locations where prospecting for oil is in progress - in case positive results are met - or otherwise in some part where crude oil may be unloaded."
