execution of new railroad c^nstructiorr, pprojects. I 50X1-HUM
in the polish press, the reconvrtruation 50X1-HUM
of secon_ tracts s .e, a comp.etion of new railroad construction
rrn;-cts. The railroad 1.nes involved are not mentioned and only the
number of kilometer: stated for the tracks rebuilt. For this reason
it is possible only in exceptional cases to bri the 'Ina material on 50X1-HUM
the Pollsh rail' net un to the latest status,
Vhen there were any doubts about the number or trac s, t
was assumed that the line section involved is single--track and its
carrying capacity boas stated accordingly.. The total carrying apacity
of the individual` east-west rail routes selected as determined by the
line section with the lowest carrying capacity unless it is possible
to utilize alternate rail rou':ee and thus to increase the carrying
capacity.
It can generally be stated that the efficiency of the Polish railroad
system is speed, I.y increasing and that is 1955 _it hae reached the
status of 1941 when. the efficiency of the Polish ra.ilro ,e. slrstem was
at its highest, It is possible that the 1941 etatus has even been
surpassed in some regions of the country:: The number of trains daily
handled by the border stationsalong the Oder4Ideisse line has been
stated:. The sane applies to rsil traffic on the Soviet-Polish border
Detniledinlornation on the volume of transloading conducted at the
'Soviet -- Polish rail change-over points is contained in Section III
of this study.
11. Detailed information on the six major East---West routes.
1. Blue Route.
!accept for its middle section*. this route had been double-track until
1945 and prior to that time had a carrying capacity of 72 trains. It
appears that on account of dismantling work the route is now single'
track on the following sections:
a. Braunsberg (Braniewo) = ?'.arienburg (?talbork);
b. Dirschau (?czew) _. Konitz (Chojnice) - zhnow (Runowo)' - Sta:rgard
It is therefore assumed that the :tarrying capacity of this line is at
mresent 36 trains.
In order to make possibly the
turnover of 48 trains per day at the stet t n Szczecin" border static
as requiredx it is necessary to split up the Blue Fast acct Routes. Thi
appears advisable since a maximum exploitation of the raidd:e section of
this route throughout its entire length is not possible over a
prolorn;ed period of timc because this line has to handle additional
traffic in connection with the shipping of coal, supply goods and
commuter traffic: The balance between the number of trains -arried on
the middle se,!,t .on of the blue route and the 48 trains required must be
rerouted to the much more efficient Green Route which extends botwec
Allenstein (Olsztyn) and Kreua (Krzyz)

2. Green Routes
This east-west route has again been made tloublew..track thr7udhout
its entire length. It may therefore be assumed that the figures
on the carting capacity of this line1as determined by German military
and civilian agencies for 1944, are still valid. The weakest link
of this route is in the section between Thorn (Torun) and Bromberg
(Bydgoszcz). By eliminating Thorn railroad station through rerouting
trains via Hohensaiza (Inowroelaw)s the total carryin,, capacity
of the Green Route may be increased without difficulty to 60 trains
per day? Since only 48 trains can be transferred at Kuestrin, the
Green Rail Route can handle 12 trains for the Blue Route.
3. Red Route,
This double-track railroad line is the most imp,)rtant Zst-West rail
route through Poland. The route can temporarily handle 72 trains
per day? Since Narsaw, an important rail junction with a very high volume
of traffic, constitutes a bottleneck on this lire? it appears
advisable to letthis line handle only 60 trains per day for sustained
,railroad operations. It also appears advisable to utilize the :rail,_
road route in the Warsaw area for a number of trains which cannot
be handled by the Violet Route..
44 Violet Route.
This routechas two weak links, namely:
ao The newly constructed Lukow - Pilawa Skierniewice railroad line,
a railroad bypass south of ?areaw* which can Candle 48 trains per
da3rD It is planned to double=track this line sectora and it ic,
possible that, work on the double-traekina of the line has already
been started.
If the need should arise, some rail, trafft.c assigned to this
route must be rerouted to the Red Route by utilizing the Lukow
Skierniewice railroad line via Si.edl.ice and +arsaw,
b-, The partly dismantled railroad lines in Silesia Iasi, and north-
east of Glogau. On account of dismantling.) the forme: carrying
capacity of this line decreased from 72 to 3) tr_i.insu By
utilizing; alternate routes in this area it will. be j?os: ible without
difficulty to reach a carryin capacity of 48 train3 on this line
section,,
Brown Routes
This route is mostly doubic?ttrack Its weakest link is in the
Kielce - t~ ?zxra and Czestochova ~. Oppeln seetionae the carrying capacity
of which is '4 and 36 trairr, respeL.,ively By utilizing al ternate
railroutes in this area it ii quite possible to reach a carrying
capacity of 48 trains as required
6., Yellow Route.
As was the case during `flcrld Car II, this route has a car:ryin;;
capacity of 72 trains,. Between Ramenz (Kamieniee Zabkowicki) and Glatz
(Xlodzko), the carrying capacity of this line decreases to 60 trains
per day and bet' ti e r s t'latz ad I i ','V : 4;~ s ch) 4o 4 i t : ns
