REFERENCES
1. On the occasion of May Day 1955,.a handbill in Arabic was published by the
World Federation of Trade Unions. The leaflet was distributed in Beirut.
2. The following Bath Party leaflets, signed A1-Kawmion al-Arab .al-Ahrar (The
Free Arab Nationalists))were distributed in South Lebanon during the
first two weeks of May;
a. A leaflet dated 15 May 1955 citing the Palestine situation., and
attacking the Communists and capitalists, the policy of the Iraqi
Government, and Israel.l
b. An und.ated.leaflet attacking the "imperialists" and their alliances
and Israel,, and stating that the USSR is no danger to the Arabs.-
c. A leaflet dated 6 ,may 1955 citing the Arab martyrs and attacking
Turkey.
d. An undated leaflet criticizing the Governments of Iraq, Jordan, Iran.,
and Egypt and stating that they assisted the "imperialists.,"
and attacking Turkey.
3. An undated leaflet put out by the General Union of Students2 in Lebanon,
a communist group, was distributed in South. Lebanon during the first two weeks
of May. The leaflet cited Lebanon's support for Syria against Turkey.
1. Cc neat. Note that while the first leaflet condemns the Communists,
the seco leaflet supports the position of the "national conference,T' a
party-line gathering. The tenor of the second leaflet vis-a-vis the.
USSR and the Communists is markedly different from the tenor of the
first leaflet.
