1. Attached find a picture card showing the main building of VIM Carl Zeiss,
Jena (Hauptwerk). Zeiss has two more works in -fena, the South Works (Sfidwerk) at a
distance of about 2 km from the main works near the factory of Optik Schott and Genossen
VEB, and the North Works (Nordwerk), also about 2 km from the main works in the neighbor-
hood of the Saalbahnhof.
2. The South Works is only partly occupied. The most important operations carried mt
out there are: assembly of the A-1 aerial training device, fabrication of drawing dia-
monds, optical grinding and polishing, and fabrication of eye glasses. The South Works zi
also has a motor pool.
3. The North Works has large storage facilities for finished Zeiss devices. There is
also the shipping department for those finished products which are of large size. It also
includes a non-motorized transportation service (horses and carriages).

4. The structure similar to a s -scraper in the left of the attached
picture card of the HauptwerkIis the Zeiss administrative building. It has fourteen XWM-A
stories. Zeiss Director Hugo Schrade has his offices in the eleventh floor of this buil-
ding. There are also the offices of production chief Dipl. Ing. Schmitz and the Zeiss
Planning Department. Commercial Director Viktor Sandmann has his offices on the mtxtkx
xwdxckkx nineth floor. The tenth floor is occupied by the WIPO department (Wirtschafts
politische Abteilung) and the offices of Dr. Friedrich Wdnne, head of the sales depart-
ment (Vertriebsleiter) under Sandmann.The Finance and Bookkeeping department xxnx2=
under the direction of Dr. Fnu. Huber are located in the first floor of the building.
5. The house with a little tower in the right foreground of the picture is the
Zeiss "people's house" (Volkshaus) where cultural performances and entertainment of the
tie Zeiss crew take place. Theme-st i~g extending from the scy-scraper to the

Volkshaus formerly housed the drawing diamond department until it was transferred to
the South Works around the beginning of 1952?It is now occupied by the department for
non-optical surface treatment of Zeiss products( for instance treatment with Nitro-Lac-
quer). The four-story building in the back and to the right of the Volkshaus houses fa-.
brication of microscopes and geodetic instruments, such as theodolites, levels, etc.

shops of all kinds. The Zeiss Construction Bureaus are in the third and fourth floor
of the building in the back of the fourteen-story scy-scraper. The Zeiss laboratories mu
can not be seen on this picture. They are installed in a separate building, the so-call
"Eulehaus", opposite the main works across Schillerstrasse.
