Economic Information

The most important Rumanian oil deposits are in Prahova as follows:
Moreni, Baicoi, etc. There are about 250 oil wells at Moreni. In the
Ploesti area the following refineries are situated: Columbia, Astra Romena,
etc. All oil wells, refineries and installations pertaining to oil production
and distribution are centralized in the SOVROM PETROL Company (Soviet Romena
Petrol), a Russian-Rumanian firm. The manager, Kaciarov, is a Russian, while
the executive personnel of the firm is Russian and Rumanian. The main office
is in Bucharest, but the branch office near the producing site in Ploesti, at
Via Diligenzei no. 11, is very important.
Construction of the hydroelectric plant at Bazias has been in progress
since April 1951, and is expected to be finished by 1953. The plant uses
waterfalls of the Danube River, the largest of which is near Bazias. The
plant will generate 1,700,000 kilowatts. The personnel directing the con-
struction work is both Russian and Rumanian, but all machinery is Russian,made.
In February 1951, construction of a pipeline was started, which will
extend from the Baicoi refinery in. Prahova, through the Floresti region,
terminating at the port of Costanza on the Black Sea. A Russian engineer is
directing the project. The other engineers are Russian and Rumanian. Present
progress, and other details of the work, are unknown.
An aircraft factory known by the initials I.A.R. (Industria Aeronautics
Romena) at Oras. Stalin is at present building pursuit planes designated as
IAR 81s. The plant employs 3,000 - 4,000 workers. Other particulars are
lacking.
