1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES CONTINUE TO MOVE
FURTHER INTO ANGOLA.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: ELEMENTS OF A SOUTH AFRICAN MECHANIZED INFANTRY
BATTALION HAVE ARRIVED HERE, PROBABLY FROM NGIVA. EQUIPMENT
INCLUDES AT LEAST 36 RATEL ARMORED FIGHTING VEHICLES (NOT ALL
ON GRAPHIC) AND TWO ALOUETTE HELICOPTERS. THIS IS PROBABLY THE
SAME UNIT THAT WAS AT NGIVA AIRFIELD
BOTH CHANGONGO AND NGIVA ARE ON THE MAJOR
HIGHWAY FROM THE ANGOLA-NAMIBIA BORDER TO LUBANGO. CHANGONGO
IS APPROXIMATELY 47 NM NORTHWEST OF NGIVA AND APPROXIMATELY
40 NM NORTH OF THE ANGOLA-NAMIBIA BORDER. THIS WAS THE SAME
ROUTE USED BY SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES IN THE AUGUST 1981
INCURSION. THE BRIDGE ACROSS THE CUNENE RIVER, DESTROYED BY
THE SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES IN SEPTEMBER 1981, HAS NOT BEEN
REPAIRED. SOUTH AFRICAN FORCES ARE NOT OBSERVED NORTH OF THE
BRIDGE.
