It is the largest operational transport helicopter in the world, about twice the size of any US helicopter. Since 1957 the Hook has established fourteen international records including one in which the Hook lifted 44, 350 lbs. to a height of 8, 983 it. For another it traveled at a speed of 183 kts over a 100 kilometer closed course. The Hook is widely used in Soviet Tactical Aviation with limited numbers in naval aviation and military transport aviation. None has been given to the East European military forces, although the Soviet Union has furnished a few to Indonesia and the UAR. Communist China currently has six on order. Because of its size, the Hook can perform unique missions which cannot be performed by any other vehicle. The only drawback noted to date is the short period between major overhauls, 500 hours or less. Technical data follows: Helicopter weight empty 59,700 lbs. Normal payload 13, 200 lbs.
