Overall, NIE 41-58 has held up well, and, with two exceptions, we believe the judgments expressed in this estimate remain valid today. 2. The statement in conclusion 5 that "there will probably be some improvement in the current strained relations with Communist China, and trade with China will probably be resumed within the next year or so" has proved to be incorrect. In fact, Communist China has continued its outspoken hostility to the Kishi government and Sino-Japanese relations have not improved. 3. Another development of particular interest and importance, which the estimate did not foresee was the recent split in the Japan Socialist Party. Paragraph 5 of the Annex indicated that there were serious internal differences in the party but concluded that the Socialists would probably "hold together" and concentrate on strengthen- ing party unity.
