An investigation is ma,de of acoustic echo signals from thin shells and solids of spherical, cylin- drical and arbitrary shape. Strain waves in thin elastic shells are studied in the f'ramework of equations of motion that correspond to a linear shell theory of Timoshenko type, and strain waves in solid bodies are studied in the asswnption of e ~6) _ To find , here, in contrast to Labeyrie's method [1], it is proposed that rather than attempting to record the N-speck~e images of a pbint source that may nc~t even be there,~the images should be synthesized,~rom the N-speckle imageG of an extended. ob~ect. The synthesis concept is based on the fact that the instantaneous countours of speckle images of extended and point objects coincide and are deternnined by the atmospheric "seeing" spot. The difference consists only in the fact that within an atmospheric seeing spot, the size of indi.vidual spots in the image of a point source is determined by the Airy disc of the telescope, while in an image of an extended object, this size is governed l~y t}ie convolution of the true distribution of object inentsity with the Airy disc of the telescope [5]. Based on this, to synthesize N independent image spots oF a point source, we single out N countours of speckle images of the extended object (1) and fill them in a random fashion with the Airy discs of the telescope. Then~ by performing operations on them ana,l.ogous to (3) and (6), we obtain
