On 22 June. 1952 the armed self-defense units in the Odaejin (12'9-47, 41-23) (EA 6581) area were organized into one company per myon (district) and one platoon per village,1 All men between the ages of 18 and 55 and all women between the ages of 18 and 50 were required to p~ticipate, with the following exceptions, those with chronic disabilities; those called "thought stragglers," who had responded poorly to Communist indoctrination; former Communist party affiliates who had been relieved, voluntarily or involuntarily, from party activities and duties; and women with children under 2 years old. The duties required by the self-defense units were additional to the regular daily work. 25X1 2e The chief of the armed self-.defense unit in Hoyang-dong (129-44 41-25) (EA-6185) was SO Chung.ch'ol (1776/2582/0772) chairman of the Hoyang-dong First Cell committee. The guards-in the unit were divided into two groups, one made up of 35 men divided into seven teams of five men each,, and the other made up of 42 women divided into si? teams of seven women ea6h. The men guarded the coast after working hours and. the women guarded the roads 24 hours a day. One team of men reported each night at 8 p.m. and patrolled by two's in two-hour shifts until 5 a.m. Trouble that could not be handled locally was reported to the 5daejin police station through the village people's committee. The police station relayed the report to the my6n company headquarters, which dispatched men to the scene of the trouble. The patrolling was sometimes neglected because members excused, themselves, pleading sickness or urgent business. 3, The road security office was in a private home at EA-606846.. The women guards wore white cloth arm bands about 4 inches wide with "guarding member" printed on them in Korean characters. One team checked the documentation of all who passed between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and another team did the same during the night. If the sterilization certificate was not in order, the offender waited while his clothes were steamed on the spot. Also, from 6 p.m, to 6 am. a team of women patrolled the village in two's looking for strangers and checking for exposed lights, 4. The village guards in Hoyang-d.ong were formerly armed with Mossin-Nagant rifles and two hand grenades per man. This equipment as called in when some of the villagers were discovered using their weapons for target practice and hunting. They subsequently performed their guard duty armed with spears and clubs.
