Since September 1950, approximately 10,000 laborers, most of them political
prisoners, have been employed on the construction of a huge hydraulic power
station at Bicasa This power station is to supply the entire Moldova area
with electricity. By March 1952, an artificial lake had been built to col-
lect the water of the Bistrita River, The lake is reported to be so large
that it will take 300 days for the Bistrita to fill it,
2? The Steaua Rosie.paper factory at Letea, a suburb of Bacau, employs 3,000
workers and manufactures 1,500 tons of writing paper and newsprint per day.
The factory has its own railroad siding..
3. The Metalurgica metal works in Strad.. Grivita Rosie, have been enlarged and
now occupy the entire street. It is believed to be intended for heavy
industry.
4. A cement factory is being built at Bicaz and will use raw materials from the
vicinity,
5. An alcohol-producing plant is located approximately five kilometers south of
Baca.ua. It sends 15 tons of alcohol to Bucharest and 150 tons to Galati every
six months. An edible oil factory was set up near this plant in 1950.
6. There is a very large shoe factory in the southern part of Bacau, which sends
most of its production to the Army.
7. There is a factory in the southern part, employing 150 workers, which produces
iron bars for horseshoes,
