l,. The Central Prison in Sofia has been rebuilt and enlarged recently. One section
of it is now used by the State Security Services. Another section has been re-
built to accommodate `la1 pimistunent cells, e?.ch one meter square and 1.8 meters
high. These cells are in constant use, mainly for the purpose of making prison-
ers talk.
the following individuals as currently or having been in
the past imprisoned in the Sofia Central Prison:

a. Krustyu Pastukhov, former leader of the now-outlawed Social Democratic
Party; he was ar-_?ested in 1948 and sentenced to a long term of imprisonment;
his death from old age was publicly announced in 1950, but
that actually he was strangled in his sleep when in Sliven Prison by a
criminal con9rict, Anton Pop Antonov, and that later, when Antonov was trans-
ferred from the Sliven to the Sofia Prison he admitted the murder, saying
that he had been told to do it by Sliven Prison authorities;
b. Tzaic'ho Kostov, former acting premier (in place of Georgi Dimitrov), secretly
executed, in the Sofia Prison; 25X1

e. Dobri Minev, industrialist and former owner of the Gloria Factory; was
arrested and thrown from the third-floor window of the police building
and, killed;
f. Kiril Todorov, age 30; son of the exiled politician, now dead, Kosta
Todorov;
as Aveto Trampov, a former Social Democrat who was editor of Svoboden Naroy,
the Social Democratic newspaper; he was a member of Parliament; after his
arrest he was interned on a small island on the Danube, where he did forced
labor; he died of tetanus after an injury for which the camp doctor refused
to give him the needed serum injection; and 25X1
