THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. Paramilitary training is obligatory for all FDJ members who for reasons
pertaining to their employment cannot be released for service with the
Volkspolizei. They receive training as motorcyclists, marksmen and
parachutists. The training is conducted by local groups in factories which
work under the control and supervision of FDJ agencies in the Laender.
2. The FDJ organization in Berlin was furnished 700 motorcycles. Sub-caliber
firing is practiced at twelve firing ranges most of which are located on
the perimeter of Berlin. Instruction in parachuting is given at present
at five training fields, including athletic fields of various enterprises
such as Siemens-Plania, Bergmann-Borsig, Niles - Plant, Wendenschloss in
Ko'epenick and Treptower-Wiesen. A control tower for parachute jumps, 4o m.
high,. is under construction. The instructors who. usually are parachutists
receive pertinent training at a.tent camp on Hoelzener See near Koenigswusterhausen.
3, While these FDJ sports courses hold appeal to the youth, there is not the
slightest enthusiasm for a national army. Although almost extortionate
methods are being applied to make the FDJ members join the Volkspolizei,
almost no youths volunteer. Although ADN continually receives reports
from all regions in the zone stating that the youth are volunteering with
enthusiasm, the results are extremely poor. The maximum number of volunteers
at enterprises which have a labor force of between 400 and 500 persons fit
for military service is reported to have totalled 20.
