ITS TRANSMISSION OR RENE- 2 5X LATION OF ITS CONTENTS TO OR RECEIPT BY AN UNAUTHORIZED PERSON IS PROHIBITED BY LAW, THE REPRODUCTION OF.THIS FORM IS PROHIBITED. 3e THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 1, The Steagul Rosu Factory is located approximately 10 kilometers south- east of Stalin (Brasov) and one kilometer west of the Stalin-Bucharest highway, The factory, which was known formerly as the Astra, is under the control of the Ministry of Metallurgy. Approxiamtely 6,000 to 7,000 workers are employed at this factory, 2. A ball bearing section was installed in 1950 in the Steagul Rosu factory. The new equipment was of Soviet type and probably of Czecho- slovak manufacture. The new ball bearing section produces five or six types.of ball bearings each of various dimensions. The entire production was for export. Since 1945 the Steagul Rosu factory has been. producing 50 ton railroad tankers (vagon cisterna) mounted on two four-wheel bogies. The tankers are built with a device permitting the operation of the car on both the standard European railroad gauge and the wider Soviet gauge. At first only one such car could be produced by the factory daily; later the pro- duction was stepped up until now it is three cars per day. All cars are painted red and bear Soviet inscriptions;, the name of the factory is painted in white underneath the car. The factory also produces 50-ton railroad freight (covered) cars for the Soviet Union, They have metal frames (painted black) and wood bodies (painted red), The markings are in Russian, The Steagul Rosu factory produces all the parts of these cars, including the springs, with the exception of the wheels which are brought from some other factory. In 1947 the factory was equipped with a Siemens blast furnace, and in 1951 a new Siemens blast furnace of greater capacity was installed. It is rumored that another new blast furnace will soon be installed, 5'.. Marcel Klein, Director General of the fa&or?y, is an old time member of the Communist Party. At the close of hostilities he was appoin e a director of one of the banks in Stalin. In 1949, he replaced Professor Tocitu as chief of the administration division of the Steagul Rosu factroy.
