Defenses in the Bay of Gdansk (Danzig) are concentrated in three main defense areasl which have been planned under the dire st:ion. of Admiral Barykadow. Two defense areas, that at Redl.cwo, betwef . Ge yni and Sopot9 and l at in the area near the city of Hel on the Hel Pena- :as:a have already been completed,, but the third area, which is located east ofOdansk near Kryrrica Moreka on the Mierzeja Wislana (F`.r~ische Nehrung) peninsula is still under construction, 25X1 `these defense areas are all being equipped with approximately the same type of equipment, and each will be armed with Soviet 130 mm. artillery guns, placed in fortified and concealed positions, and with about twelve SC mm. anti- aircraft guns. The areas also will have unnderground.munitiona depots, electric power plants, and communications systems. The area at Redlow+ can only be supplied from the sea, and a new older has been constructed for unloading: equipment for the area. A small cog railroad is being laid from the pier to the almost 100 meter high cliffs which border this area of the coast, and underground tunnels have bueL. dug to connect this supply line with the various artillery positions, depots ,and power plants which make u the R.edlowo defense area.. The Hel defense area is suppli,etd ~ y rail. 25X1 no information on the method which will be used for? supplying Krynica Morska. 3. It is expected that these three areas of long range artillery will check the approach of enemy ships into the Bay of Gdansk. The cliffs extend for about three kilometers to the west, where they come to a stop at Lake Wiecko (Vietzker See), forming a shelter for the eastern sector of the lake and protecting it from observation from the Baltic Sea. The land between the coastal elevation and the lake is forested. the special commission arrive~5X1 in the area from Szczecin. (Stettin)., and was joined by Marshal Rokossowski and unnamed Soviet generals for one day during its examination of the region. It is expected that coastal artillery emplaccements will be constructed in this region, but no work has yet been started here. 5. A unit of about 800 Polish paratroopers is quartered in former German barracks in a small forest near GdanskBrzezno. It is thought that this unit has been newly organized. Some workers are quartered in newly constructed barracks and houses located near the factory, but others are transported to the factory from Bydgoszcz in bases., A branch of the local railroad will extend from the powder factory to the Bydgoszcz railroad, and a second line TT 11. connect the factory with Trzciniec (P54/S84) on the Bydgoszcz-Inowrocl.aw railroad. 25X1 25X1 llo Comments may be referring to the ammunitions plant a egnowo, which other information stated was camouflaged by the name United Chemical Industrial Plant, but is producing gunpowder.
