1. Kherson is the second largest port on the Black Sea, after Odessa, and
it is situated on the Dnepr River at an equal distance (20 km) from the
mouths of the Dnepr and its tributary, the Ingulets River, Between
December and March the port is frozen and even in October and November
fog makes navigation difficult.
2. The principal exports of Kherson are manganese and agricultural products
such as grain, legumes, fruits, raw cotton, hides andhoney.
3. Kherson is the terminal for both the Dnepr River traffic and the railroad
traffic which comes from three directions. The railroad has a line west,
to the military port of Nikolayev; north, to the manganese and iron mines
of Nikopol and Krivoy Rog; and east, to the Crimea through Perekop.
4. A deep canal permits access to the port by ocean?going Black Sea vessels,
This canal is 68.5 km long, 100 in wide,and 6.9 in deep. Dredges are
constantly at work to keep the bottom clear of debris and silt carried
by the river.
5. The port has an area of 87.2 hectares and is divided into five sections

unloaded. This pier has seven landing stages and a depth of 2.5
to 4.7 meters
e. a pier for unloading wood used in construction and for loading fish
for the Stalin fish cannery.
6. Each pier has mechanical cranes, warehouses and covered platforms.
7. The river boats are moored for the winter on the eastern bank of the
river, opposite the grain wharf. There they undergo repairs from
December to February.
8. The oil port is north of the city and an oil pipe line extends from
it to the gasoline tanks and the oil refinery.
9. The city is divided into two parts. One part is situated on the
western bank of the river and faces the quarantine island and the
other part is the "military city". The latter includes barracks to
the north?and i* the south the three suburbs of Zabalka, Sukharnaya
and Koshevnaya. There is both bus and streetcar service to Aleski,
the fishing and 'fish-canning center.
10. The principal installations are as followsg

c. Soviet Navy buildings?which include the naval court and legal
offices, a radio station, an arsenal, a school for junior naval
officers, a laundry and a prison for the personnel of the Black
Sea Fleet

e, factories, among them the Petrovskiy,which produces water pipes; "
the Stalin fish cannery; the Eighth of March plant; a glass factornand
two brick factories marked No. 1 and No. 2
f. an advanced school for parachutists and glider pilots
g. barracks to accomodate 20,000 men
h. a shipyard
i. a grain elevator
j. a merchant marine school
k. a mill, saw mill,auto repair shop,and a brewery
