THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. Comtextil is dependent on Centroeomtextil in Bucharest, which is attached
to the Ministry of Trade. It has depots of its own and supplies textilei
to 13 sales centers at Timisoara and five others at Lugoj, Deta, Caransebes,
' Resita and Oravita respectively. The depot and offices are located at~
Timisoara, 5 5trada Gheorghe Lazar, as are the thirteen sales centers.
Comtextil deals in textiles, clothing, footwear, knitwear, perfumery, and
fancy goods. There are 165 officials, 500 employees at the sales centers
at Tirriisoara, and 150 employees at sales centers elsewhere.
2. The amount of production for the civilian population has been reduced by
about 30 or 40 percent.. It is believed that production for the Army has
increased proportionately. The quality of readymade clothing has grad-
ually deteriorated to the point where many goods are so bad that they
are unsaleable.
3, All textile shops have been transferred from the Minlstry of Trade to
the Ministry of Light Industry and attached to a special department,
Called General Sales Center for the Production of the Light Industry.
The management of the Department is in the hands of two men, one an engineer
named Nicolau (formerly Nadler), and the other Zaharia (formerly Silberstein),
me.nager of the State Depot in Bucharest. Both are very capable. This change
was introduced because the factories had produced goods of such poor ~~uality.
Follot~ng the new arrangement, the factories have improved the quality of
goods.
4. Since 1951,"plans have been under prepar~ztlon for a reorganization of the
retail trod?. According to these plans, all sales centers are to be 'trans-
formed into "torgs". All sales centers for textiles, loather goods, .food-
.;,stuffs, metal goods, and other products are to be put under one local manage-
,.: ment. This raethad is to facilitate co!~trol and to reduce expense. A
