(LISTED BELOW) SUPPLEMENT TO REPORT NO. THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 25X1 1. From 20 December 1951 to 21 January 1952 the Chinese Communists were attempting to recruit S,OCO cadets, 1,000 each for the Air Force and Naval Academies and 600 each for the Artillery, Armored Force, Air Defense, Army Engineers and Ord nance Academies. Recruits for other armored force academies were not being accepted. 2. Recruiting was limited to students of middle school standing, aged 17 to 25, in good health, and having no political complications. Priority was to be given students studying at the branch schools of the People's Revolutionary University in various provinces, and to soldiers' and heroes' children who applied for recruitment. 3? Cadets selected were first to undergo a six-month cour'B3 of political training, after which they were to receive instructions in their various specialties. For this reason the military academies have accepted new recruits only every six months. The Communists twice before had openly recruited students for the various mili- tary academies, once in December 1950 and again in June 1951. These campaigns resulted in the selection of 45,000 cadets. 54 The December 1951 campaign was not announced openly but was conducted through the Chinese Communist Party, the Democratic Youth League and military organi- zations, assisted.by various students' unions, youth groups, and women's organi- zations.
