DATE DISTR. Oil DrillingMethods, Equipment and Refinery Capacity 30 Jan. 1952 The mean depth of Hungarian oil wells is 1200 meters. Preparations are now in hand, principally by Dunantuli Asvanyolej (ex Maort) to drill down to 2000-3000 meters in Kanitza and Lispe. New drilling is taking place to the north-west of Szeged. This area in the Puszta is subject to flooding.,and drilling was in fact stopped in the spring of 1951, due to floods. Drilling is also taking place north east of Szeged, along'the Maros river, with some success. This area is prolific in gas. 2. Ec ui eat a. Mannesmann Trauzl, Vienna, have supplied Hungary with complete rotary pumps, tool jointsland rock bits, The latter, which are very good, are only available up to 5 3/4". Rock-bits have also been supplied by the U.S.S.R. Those above 5 3/1,11 diameter are of poor quality. Most rock-bits used in Hungary are '8 3/8" and 8 3/4'I. Neither the U.S.S.R., Austria, nor Rumania (Resita and Concordia) are able to supply these sizes or of satisfactory quality. The two Rumanian firms do, however, supply large pumps (7 3/411 x 18") of quite good quality. Up to two years ago, Hungary received oil equipment from Ansaldo. A large order for Italian drill collars was cancelled two months ago. b. Hungary is now dependent on Manfred Weiss for its total requirements of drill-pipe and casing. Manfred Weiss is able to produce drill-pipe up to grade D very successfully. They are unable to produce grade A drill-pipe. They are unable to produce chrome-nickel-steel drill collars, but only molybdenum-steel. The latter are quite unsuitable for deep wells, and Hungary urgently needs chrome-nickel-steel drill collars. Hungary is also very short of diesel engines and accessories. There is also a serious shortage of electric cable for use in Schlumberger measuring apparatus? Refinery Capacity and Output Hungarian refinery capacity is 1.,200.,000 tons per annum. Total crude oil production is 7009000 tons per annum, Crude oil (quantity unknown) is imported from Austria by tank car on a barter basis. General a0 The Nagykanizsa area uses mainly steam engines, and has completed 30 wells so far this year., using "strip derricks". b, The drilling rate is comparatively short, The German (war-time') record was 670 meters in 24 hours, This has several times been beaten in Hungary., where the record stands at 700 meters in 24 hours. c. The vehicles used in the oil fields are mainly "caterpillar"., used in conjunction with ex Army equipment. A repair organization for "Mack" trucks (16 ton) is now being set up0 d0 One Ideco drilling rig (origin unknown) has been received by Hungary during 19510 0ROL - U.S. OFFICIALS ONLY Approved For Release 2009/06/15: CIA-RDP82-00457R010300060009-6
