1. In order to increase the defense of Peiping, Tientsin and the North
Chine. coastal area, the Chinese Communists ordered NIII1 Jung-cheat
to place 350,000 (sic) regular troops of the North Was Military
Area along the Peipinglukden railway and coastal area around Tientsin.l
All weapons for the above troops were to be Soviet-oede.
2. On 20 October 1951. the Tientsin municipal government, using 7,000
coolies, began to repair trenches and tunnels connecting forts in
the coastal area around Tientsin. These farts have been placed
under Soviet coomand, with Polish and Japanese gunners. The Tunnels
are 4.5 meters wide and are equipped with water and electricity.
