1. Rumanian Army units are reported to be on guard duty at the Cazanul stretch
of the Iron Gate rapids. Lookout shelters have been excavated in the hills
overlooking the narrows.
2 The general rule for small boats and barges plying the Reni.Galati-Braila-
Giurgiu course is to travel only by night and without stopping in the
course of the night's run. All shipping going to ports of the upper Danube
must stop at Giurgiu, where an inspector of the Security Police comes on
board together with the harbor commandant and an Army representative for a
most thorough search., Special attention is given to the minute verification
of all crew members. The slightest discrepancy between the lists brought on
board by the Security inspector and the roll of the inspected boat is liable
to result in holding up the ship.
'I. The old ferry boat at Giurgiu has been replaced with a much larger one,, able
to transport the heaviest artillery and armored vehicles..
/,~.? Reportedly, all major bridges throughout the country have been strengthened
to permit the passage of heavy armor, including Soviet T-34 tanks.
5. Construction activities are reported at Vidin-Calafat, where existing harbor
facilities are being greatly enlarged, so as to merge the harbor facilities
of the two cities.
6 Apparently, in view of a complete Soviet control of all river transportation,
many Soviet specialists and Soviet Army engineer units have recently arrived
in Rumania and are being posted at various points along the Danube.. There
are indications that some of the Soviet engineer units are airborne formations.
