On the anniversary of the Chinese Communist Government, 1 October, the
Government organizations, schools, and factories in Wuchang and Hankow
urged the people to celebrate with enthusiasm, It was plain, however,
that the celebration was not such an occasion of carefree festivities
as it appeared to be in the previous year. During two years of Communist
administration various measures of control, interference, compulsory
contributions, laud reform, industrial and commercial regimentation,
donations of money for arms and planes to aid North Korea, etc,, have been
imposed on the citizens. Former supporters, such as students, farmers,
and members of labor unions were dissatisfied and showed their lack of
enthusiasm in various ways. The medium and lower Communist cadre members,
especially new members, were also unenthusiastic. Evidences of revolt
against the tight control of the Communists could be best seen in the
slogans and patiphlets posted in dark corners and secluded places in lanes,
factories, schools and public resorts. They attacked the CommuAsts with
sarcasm' ridicule, and scorn and voiced the hope of the people for Nationalist
and Allied landings.
