1. The following military corrands, unite, and extabliehments are located on
the island of Lastovo:

This command, which had been located in the town of Sveti Peter until
the end of 19500 was transferred ia the first months of ti,is year to
a place called Zlopolje, whieh is situated one and one half kilometers
southeast of St. Peter; recently a camp has been constructed there and
almost all units from St. Peter have been transferred into its buildinzs.
Major Pavle Ovijic is the commanding officer. He wears red insignia
and probably belongs to the Marines. He is presently attending a course
in Belgrade. The Political Commissar is a jor, a nontenegrini,who
wears a Navy uniform. The Chief of Etaff is a captain and a Slovene.
Lt. Anton Antica is in charge of supplies. There are many rore officers
and non.conmissioned officers at headquarters in addition to those
mentioned above, but their names are unknown.
Varine retiment
Mariae Regiment:a Headquarters was also transferred at the beginning of
the year from. St. Peter to the camp at Zlepolje. Commanded by a
NOntenecrin jor, the regiment has about 10000 men.

This headquarters is located in the camp at Zlopolje. An artillery
major is commanding officer of the 400 nen attached to the unit.

This home is located in Et. Peter in a building situated on the main
square, (on the left side if coming from the port). A large number
of officers are seen there. Families of married officers stay at
private houses in St. Peter. Over a year ago these houses had been
emptied of the former inhabitaats.

The Italians had built a warehouse, with two storeys and basement, close
to the Church in the town of St.-Petar. Supplies for the Whole garrison
are deposited in this warehouse skid, is managed by a captain0

Two buildings, 147:ose construction was completed before the and of 1950p
are located outoide of St. Peter on the way to Lastovo. The dirmnsions
of the first building are 24 x 90 and of the second 34 X 14 meters;
both are one Storey buildings. A small guard.house is located between
the two buildings which are surrounded by barbed wire and watched by
guards.

At the beginning of the sector known as "Vlnopolje" where the warehouse
for clothing and footwear is located, a road leads away to the right of
the main St. Petar-Lastovo rood for about 700 meters; a warehouse of
reinforced concrete? 22 x 9 meters in dimension, is built there on the
edge of a small pine grove. The warehouse is located close to the
mountain wall and therefore is very difficult to see either from the
sea or air. This warehouse was completed a short time ago0

Some tunnels north from the center of St. Peter were constructed hy the
Italians. These tunnels, used to etore fuel, have been considerably
enlarged and repaired during 1950. The arrival of email Navy tankers
which unload fuel for this depot is often noted.

A building constructed by the Italians is located about 50 meters out.

paint of different colors. It is surrounded by barbed vire and

Zlopolje camp buildings are shown on the attached sketch (attachment A).
The buildings were finished during 1950 and were constructed by the "Ivo
Lucie-Lavcevic" ifilitary Construction Enterprise. The following are
located in this camps
1) A one-storey building about 45 meters long, Where Military Base
Headquarters of Lastovo and of Marine Regiment Headquarters are
located.
2) A one-storey building, about 45 meters long, in whiCh the military
hospital is located. Director of the hospital is Captain of Sanitary
Servicee Dr. Pejovic0 In addition to him there are a few more
doctors and male nurses.
3) A one-storey building, about 35 meters long, Where the non.commissioned
officers mess4lall? club, and quarters arelocated.
4) A one.storey building, about 25.30 meters long, Where the Headquarters
staff of the Artillery unit is located.
A one.storey building, about 45 meters long, where personnel of the
Marine regiment are quartered.

Fortifications on the Ieland of Lastovol

On this part of the island the fortifications have been and are being -
constructed on the Capep of laglav, Bajski Rat, Zaplanikal and Velo'More.
1) Capejlaelav ... There are a large number of bunkers for coastal
artillery situated from 10 to 30 meters above the surface of the
sea. All bunkers are armed and garrisoned, In addition to the
'bunkers, there are also small underground shelters for crews and '
for ammunitions -and small tanks for dr4nking.water.
Cae, Baiski Rat .? A new road for truCkm has been made along the
Coast from Cape Zeglav to Cape Baj ski Hat. It is constructed on
counterselOpes W3 that it is almost imOossible to see it from the
sea, Between .this new road and the sea a whole series of net

the extreme point of Cape Bajeki Rat 3 to 4. bunkers for coastal
artillery are located, These bunkers are aleo armed and garrisoned,

cape itself and in the surrounding area, NO details are available
about these worke. Iii the gulf of DOboka, proceeding to.Oblo Brdo
larger works are under way and mine explOsions are constantly heard.
Further details are not known,. however, because the approach to the
area is forbidden and the coastal 'guard is ordered to *Pen fire at
every ship and boat which comew closer than"500 meters.
4) Cape of Vele Mble .. In the gulf of "Perna" where the extreme point
of. Velo Mare hegins,'four wooden barracks were built before the
end of 1949, A special unit is stationed there, equipped with
anti...landing equipment such as small guns on tires, mortars, light
and heavy machine guns Close to these barracks a building of
prismdtic ehape-has been erected, in Which the staff-of this unit
is stationed, On "kmtenica" elevation, to which a new toad for
trucks as constructed in the beginning of 1950; a large reflector
post is stationed, equipped with a German 150 centimeter reflector.
Underground shelters for a generator and Diesel?motor are built
close to it, On the very Cape of Velo More 6 to 7 hunkers without
roofing were built in 1950, Forty to fifty meters 'distant from
each other they are In, 195O
underground trendies. The bunkers
are situated about 25 =tart above sea level and are armed 'and
garrisoned. Approximately in the middle of the cape construction
of a large tunnel, the opening of which is in quadrangular form and
of 6 x 6 neterdimensions, is under way.

The following coastsaine forms the southern part of the island; Cape
of Vele !lore, the gulf of Mika, Porto Roso, Cape ttruea.
1) Thp Mtka Gulg e The following military objects were erected
about 200 meters in from the gulf coast in the first half of
19508

a) A one-storey building about 30 meters long, covered with red
tile, Where a unit Headquarters is located.
b) A one-storey building, about 25 meters long, Where a unit of
unknown strength is located.
c) A one-storey building, about 25 reterslong, about 100 meters
distant from the previous building, toward Vele Itere, which
serves for Soldiers' quarters.
d) Between the two latter buildings a large tank for drinking
water has been erected.
e) A new truck road leads to these buildings. It minds from
St. Peter through 2aopolje to the Mrka Gulf, and further on,
along the seacoast to Porto Roso.
This whole area is being strongly fortified. The works now being
constructed are of far larrer dimensions than they were in 19500

many laborers' battalions are engaged in executing the work. Any
approach to this zone is severely prohibited and permanently watch-
ed by special KNOJ patrols, which guard the whole area day and
night. Mine explosions are heard from the whole area, and the
arrival of Navy units is often noted, bringing construction material.
Porte Roo - Two KNOJ platoons are stationed here, both
belonging to the company at Lastovo. They .arc mainly used for
petrol and guard duty on the works under construction in the
southern and south-eastern parts of the island.
4) aReAlEgge - The light-house, called "Struga"? is situated on
the cape itself. Its range is 18 miles. In addition to the
light-home, many bunkers have been constructed on this cape, but
do not appear to be garrisoned.,

although therewas a rumor that construction Should be started soon. An
old fortification anti-aircreft artillery and machine-gun posts are in
the Novi Hum sector on the extreme north-eastern part of the island.
These posts and the fortification are not believed to be garrisoned,
however,

The following have been or are being constructed on this part of the Island:
1) In 19474.948 bunkers were being built in the zone called "Urine"
north of St. Peter. They are armed and permanently garrisoned.
2) A new truck road leads from St. Peter along the western seacoast to
the small island of St. Juraj. At a place called "Pasadur" where
a bridge formerly was located, a new bridge has been erected and was
completed in March of this year connecting Lastovo Island with
the small island of St. Juraj. The bridge is made of wood and .

and 45 tb-50 meters long. It is capable of handling heavy traffic.

which extends by bridge over the mall gulf of St, Juraj to Cape
Barbarossa.
4) A donsiderable nuMber of bunkers for coastel artillery have been
built on Cape Barbarossat'and four wooden barrecks are located in
A grove; gun crews are Stationed in the barracks.
5) Sea tines 'have been placed all the southern and western coast (iic)
In order to ttop landings.
6) The road, to St. Jaraj Island leading from the bridge via,"Fastidtr"
in a northerly direction recently has been finished to Cape
Prehodiste which is located on the northern coast of St; :uraj
island. Four large bunkers have been built on the western gide
and two on the north..eastern aide of Cape Prehddiete 20 meters
above sea level. Underground Warehouses and -shelters hate been
'conetructed in addition to these bunkers. which are garrisoned and
very well camouflaged; Mines are placed Along the coast of' the
Cape.
7) A flew cable station has been constructed in "Kructica" valley, by
which St. Jutaj Island ie connected with the cable station in "Bina"
valley oh Koreas' Island. Some telephone cables extend from
imam station to parts of the island.
ea Cenlral Dart of talkielanA
The following works have been and are being constructed on this part of
the ielands : ?
. .
1). ? About 200 meters below the top, on which there .is the small
St Juraj church, the cohstruction of a. new.building.was started-
lat the beginning j5f February. of this year. The builling.is 20 x'lly
meters in dimension,? divided. into two quadrangular buildings
11 x 11 meters and 9 x 9 Meters. It. is oneftstorey-only and roofed
with red tile. Three office toems and 2 rooms for quarters will
be located in the smaller section. In the basement of the larger
.building a bunker Is to be built while the building itself will
eerve for camouflage. Allegedly, this will serve as the reconnaissance
station dad central Military observation post. The road leading to
Hum is repaired but only for We with light horse...carte. Two large
bunkers are in the area of this new building and the top of .Hum
itself. Built earlier, they have been repaired a little but have
no roof, merely parapetp. On the side of the. tankers is a 20 meter
long undergremi.shelter. Nene of these military objects is
garrisoned.
2) FleseloAdo ? In 1944 large fortifiection:Works were carried out
in this area, at which time all male. inhabitants 15 years of age
and older had to work under the control of partisans.- A great
number of bunkers and underground shelters were Wilt. During 1949
and 1950 the works were resumed in the whole sector, but there are
no further details available. During the current year there has
been a. lot of activity especially at a place called "Gueicice". .
Nine explosiona and drilling are constantly heard.

work.
3) Skakleno Brig ? Oft this hill whidh is situated west of "Woo"
Valley some larger construction works were begun early in the
current year, and are being carried out by a military work force.

3. Cervation
The following observatiOn stations are situated on Lastovo Islands
a.
The observation station in the old fort, above the town of Lastovo,
is furnished with radio.telegrephio equipment, heliograph, and
reflector and is staffed by a staff sergeant with 10 sailors A
meteorological station is located nearby and is managed by two '
civilians.
b.? An observation station vhich was on Hum, until the current year
when it was abolished.
c. On Zirinje, there is an observation station equipped only with
optical instruments. A special road, constructed for the purpose,"
leads to this station via Vinopolje. Immediately below the
Observation station, fortifications for coastal artillery are
situated.
de On "Site .height? on the amall island of St. juraj which is
connected to Lastaeo by a bridge, there is a modern observation
station equipped with radio-telegraphic equipment and with all
optical instruments. On the side of the station it is poesible
to see an antenna, whichhaethe form of a cross, from Which many
wires are hanging. The observation station is garrisoned by an

4.0 KNOJ on Lastevo Islend
The Headquarters of the KNOJ Company is located in the former Carabinieri
building in the town pf Laatovo where the People's Militia Station And
UDB are oleo located. Commanded bra Lieutenant, a native. of Bosniao
the .ComOssay also includes some nonsicommissioned officers and about 30 hNOJ
soldiere stationed at Headquarters. The cempaay's taak,is the control of
the port Where all incoming and oUtgoing ships are Checked and searched,
including all fishing boats. In addition to port control, this company
also patrols the whole Wand itsdif.
5. Flotilla of the Maritime KNOT
The Maritime KNO.T Flotilla is located in the port of the town of S7eti
Peter, The company is commanded by an Ensign of Slovenian origin and
two maritime patrol leaders, one a staff, iergeent and the other a
sergeant. Approximately 20 sailors comprise the flotilla, which has at
its disposition a patrol boat marked !MC" followed by an unknoVn number.
The boat former4 hdlonged to the Financial Inepectorate and vas called
"Kraljevid Marko "0 The task of this flotilla is to patrol the whole
area around the Island and the sea between the islands of Mljet and
Korcula, as far as the Island of Sumac. The patrol boat is almost alWays
active.
6, UDB and People's MIlitia on Lastoyo Island
a. Ia.=
There is an UDB Unit (Ispostava) on the island with offices on the
groundfloor of the former Carabinieri building in the. town of Lastovo.
In charge of UDB is Stjepan Katie who has under hie command agents
located in various places on the Island. This Unit is under the
jurisdiction of the UDB of Korcula? from Where Second Lieutenant
Sardelic often visits Lastovo and remains a few days each time.
b. People's Militia Station.
The People's Militia Station is also located on the first floor of the
former Carabinieri building. Commanding Officer of the station is
Sergeant Donko Dragojevic who has two more non.commissioned officers

large works are being constructed in the area along the coastline from Cape
Soganj to Porto Rose. In 1950 twenty blinkers were built there, 150 meters
from the sea with the bunker roof of concrete about 1 meter thick, and
with the walls about 60 centimeters thick, A bunker is about g meters
across, and 230 meters high. The outer dimensions of the bunker's are:
width 3.20 with 2.30 above the surface, and 1 meter below the surface.
At about 70 to SO centimeters above the surface there are 2 to 3 gun slits
with outer dimensions Of 60 x 30 centiteters And with inner dimensions of
50 x 20 centimeters. Ten to fifteen meters above these bunkers; artillery
posts are beidg built. They are not roofed but have a parapet.1.20 meters
high and 50 eohtimeters large. Some tunnels, with exit near the church at
St. Peter, ere in the process of construction. These tunnels are about
3 kilometere lont, 4 to 5 Meters large and 4,to 5 meters high. Between
every 40 to 45. meters openings are being constructed on the western side
of the tunnels, with 2x0070 meter dimensions. Before these openings is
a round parapet of concrete, about 3 meters large, and 30 tO 40 centimeters
thick.
