1. Of all the DADA trade agencies (Fachanstalten) which handle the foreign
trade of the DDR, the DAHA Machinery and Electrical Equipment (DANA-
Baschinen und Elektrotechnik) is the most important. Under the jurisdic-
tion of this office is the particularly significant Import Section 6
(Importabtoilung 6), which is under the direction of Danner, fnu. Every
import or export transaction in which the v-rious DADA organizations are
involved 4 must have the approval of Import Section 6. This applies
not only to WA-Mhschinen und Elektrotechnik, but also to the sister offices
for optics, ceramics, etc.*
2. Import Section 6 has its own Office for Economic Plenhing(Planwirtschaftsstelle).
This office has a special planning group in every branch of the DADA
Machinery and Electrotechnology. Pll these planning offices are in turn con-
nected with the State Commission for Planning as well as with the State Secretariat
for Raw Material Procurement (Staatssekretariat Par MaterialbeschaffUng),
Hifnfler? as head of Import Section 6, is the technical and commercial specialist,
while his deputy, Strange, fnup** who is the Party man in the Section, handles
liaison with the v-rious governmental offieds. Strenge, a machinery and machine
tool expert, formerly worked for Siemens in Berlin. ue is approximetely 48 years
of age and is more than a were political activist.
3. "iccordinr, to an adrertising brochure prepared by DARA in May 1951, DADA
Machinery and Electical Equipment is divided into two main branches, DADA-
Maschinen and DAHA-Elektro. Each branch is broken down into a number of

* Cotment: The reletion of import Section 6 to DAHA-Naschinen und
. electrotechn . and to other trade egencies. of DAHA as described in this report
is not clear. The report seems to state that the Import Section 6 which is a
subdivision of one trede agency of anuA, viz., Drau?naschinen und Elektrotechnik,
also perfores the same functions for the other trade egencies of DAHA. However,
oter trede agencies wore reported earlier this year to have their own import
chiefs (re Attachment) or import sections (seeIIIIIIIIIIbara. 1, 2h).
Import, Sen.. identified in a report for rid-December 1950 az the DMA
Section responsible for the purehasing of maCelnery for Eastern Germaey (see
para. 1). It is possible that the present report sasnesto stete only
that the other trade agencies of DAHA have import sections which perform the
same-functions for them as import Section 6 performs for DAIIA-eiTeschinen and
Electrotechnik. SECRET
