50X1-HUM
1. The Soviets are developing a large military depot in the area I within
the triangle formed by the cities of Ketrzyn (Rastenburg ? R55 Pisz
(Johannisburg R54/A54) s. and Crzysz (Aryt R54/A66). The Masurian Lakes
in this region are frozen at this time of year, and provide natural highways
for the transport of supplies into the area from the section of the USSR
formerly a part of East Prussia. Among the equipment and stores being brought
into the area are artillery of various calibers, with ammunition; tractors and
trucks; tanks; and engineering equipment.
2. There are few inhabitants in the area, and many buildings in the cities and
towns are deserted. There were at one time modern shipyards on the lake.
but these were diamantled and shipped to the Soviet Union. Now new equipment
is being sent to the shipyards in order to rebuild them. Many of the fortifica?
tions in this area which were built during the last war are still in very good
condition.
