Police (P8litz), Poland .i-jas the location of the largest German factory for the manufacture of synthetic gasoline. This factory, undamaged and contain- ing large stoats of;asoli no,, %ras taken over by the Russians at the end of 'Jorld '?ar? IT. After dismantling it, shipping all equipment and machinery to the.US SR and demolishing part of the buildings, the Russians returned the plant to the Polish authorities in 191+7. About the end of 1949 the empty factory buildings where fenced i ith barbed wire, and in February 1950, with the arrival of some factory equipment and machinery from Silesia, re- construction work sins begun. however, progress has been slow because the shipment of necessary material has been delayed, and from all indications the factory will not resume operations in 1950? Some workers are of the opinion that the factory will be used to manufacture products from pig-iron rather than for the production of synthetic gasoline. . This statement is supported by the fact that all the gasoline-manufacturing equipment tras re- moved the Russians, and it is unlikely that the machinery now being in- stalled could be used for this rurpose. 2. The machinery and equipment necessary for the prorlxction of synthetic aso- line is imported from Getr:~any and is now in use in a factory at Dwory near Kratcow), which Is the largest .synthetic gasoline factory in Poland today, q rith its 1950 production expected to reach 50,000 tons. A factory at Luban (Lubau), Silesia, is also being equipped to produce synthetic gasoline but it is not yet ready for production. 3. In 1949 the raw petroleum from T-calls in Poland amounted to about 165,000 tons, with an additional 55,000 tons being imported. The 1950 production is expected to reach 200,000 tons; imports will also increase, with the bulk coning from Iran and Rumania, and small amounts from the U C5 R, the latter consisting chiefly of benzine suitable for aviation purposes. From Iran the oil, is shipped aboard the Polish tanker IS.APRPATY, which often discharos her cargo at the port of Constanza, Rumania, whore the oil is refined and later transported via rail?key to Polan?.. Germany and Lngland supply most of the drill tools for the petroleum ryndustry, and the Corarsunists are n&clnf' efforts to find new and better sources of supply. For purposes of fuel distribution, Poland has been divided intutwo areas, in one of which a mixture of benzine and alcohol is sold and in the other, a ben- zine and ethylene mixture. rl_ASSIFICATION L'X-. srnre NAVY XH~ DISTRIBUTION artnt,: r-rr " o c - Me Iettor of oB Oc oaer 1073 from the Director of Central Intelligence to the
