The establishment of the People's Uenocracy in Czechosiova.
kia naturally 'had far-reaching effects on the Viennese
vzechs. In 1945 the new Czech sovernment attempted to
persuade the Czechs in Vienna to return to their homes
them excellent opportunities. Of the 10 000
by offering
persons who left Vienna at that times approximaately i,000
have returned illegally.
2Q By order of the Cominformsthe Czech Central Committee in
Vienna was to be communized through the activities of the
Central Committee of the KPOO., However this plot failed
when the anti-Communist Czech organizations withdrew their
delegates from the Com itteeo Since that time the Czech
Central Committee$no lon;;er being licenced,.has not existed
legally.
3. The association of the Czechs and Slovaks in Austria, which
was called into being with the help of official Czech
authorities, exerts influence on the Czech Communists only,
The Viennese Czechs have no desire whatever to be assimi-
lated either politically or culturally. The Czech rental
libraries in Vienna still lend books which have been banned
in Czechoslovakia and denounced as hostile to the interest
of the people. Likewise the Czech theater association com-
pletely ignores the cultural regulations valid in Czochor
Slovakia'.
