1. Six representatives of the .Military Intelligence Service, Armed Forces of
the Philippines (MMIS, AFP), including one captain, one lieutenant, and four
enlisted men, were sent to TaiVtt_ early in 1950 to survey military instal-
lations and to determine the effectiveness of Chinese Nationalist defenses
for averting a Communist invasion of Taiwan, The mission returned to Manila
after an absence of approximately two months.
2. This mission was kept highly secret. The fact that the Philippine Government
had sent such a mission was not to be disclosed to representatives of the US.
3iembers .of the group wore civilian clothing and were heavily armed.
3. On their arrival in Taipei, members of the mission were taken into custody
by the Chinese authorities and were detained for two days, after which they
were released through the efforts of the Philippine Fiubassy.
Comment. The identities of the members of the mission or the exact
period of their stay could not be determined. It is believed that the
mission was in Taiwan during February and March. The substance of the
mission's findings is not known. The period of detention in Taipei in-
icates that the Philippine Embassy there was not apprised of the mission
until assistance was required to secure release of the group.
